Here are 5 simple steps to become a better and fearless fundraiser..
Remember that we are: Philanthropic Advisors* & Storytellers NOT “just” Fundraisers. Remember that we are: Building Movements NOT “just”Fundraising. *We are advising philanthropists as to whether or not our mission or movement is a strategic choice and values-match for them.
Chase VALUES not just MONEY!
Opening Donor Conversation:What challenge have you faced that changed you? Who or what got you through it? What do you value now because of it? How has that shaped your philanthropy?
PROSPECTING:
~ Connecting with more people (where are these networks?)
CULTIVATION: Listen/Learn
~ What are their interests? What are their values? What motivates them to give/volunteer? How do they currently give/volunteer?
ENGAGEMENT: Engage
~ What type of engagement matches their values/interests? Who should they know within the organization to start to build a community?
SOLICITATION: Enroll/Invite
~ “Are you interested /or open to a conversation about donating to our work this year? I’d love to invite you to make a gift! Let’s chat next week/can I send you an email with a few giving levels/options?”
Shape the solicitation around your needs: “We want to raise $$ by December and are calling upon # of donors to give $100 to $25,000 to keep us strong- what would be meaningful for you?”
APPRECIATION:
~ For the ‘thank you’, craft a personalized approach and go “beyond the handwritten card.” Connect to a donors’ ‘why’ they gave to you. Use your board members and other donors here!
STEWARDSHIP: Listen/Learn/Engage
~ What are their interests NOW? What are their values NOW? What motivates them to give/volunteer NOW? How do they give/volunteer NOW? Share the impact of their initial gift and what can come next with continued support.
Point to progress and research ~ show them the trajectory your work can go on. And, highlight the entire movement or ecosystem we are a part of! Make them feel part of something bigger than themselves.
UPGRADING: Enroll/Invite
~ “Are you interested /or open to a conversation about upgrading your gift this year? I’d love to invite you to consider $$ (doubling, adding $5,000) gift! Let’s chat next week/can I send you an email with a few giving levels/options?” Keep resources flowing.
