ACCESS Reproductive justice Thrives: $3Mil Growth while IN Partnership with Wright Collective
During a critical growth phase, ACCESS REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE partnered with Wright Collective and experienced a budget increase from under $1M to nearly $3M, tripling the staff size and positioning the organization for sustained success. With their current ED providing a strong foundation of strategic leadership, WC helped enhanced donor communications and developed fundraising strategies to meet the needs of the largest statewide abortion fund in California.

CHALLENGES
WC INTERVENTION
RESULTS
Leadership and stability issues
Supported the organization in shifting its board focus from operational tasks to governance, ensuring a strategic approach aligned with their leadership. WC also provided guidance on board development, improving alignment with the organization’s broader mission and fundraising goals.
As a result, the organization grew significantly. Their annual budget increased from under $1M to approximately $3M, and they were able to triple their staff size
Lack of donor engagement, especially small donors
Developed a structured donor engagement program, including clear communication strategies, regular updates, and ways to build stronger relationships with donors.
ACCESS RJ now has a high rate of monthly donations, with about 80% of small donors (under $500) giving monthly, indicating strong donor retention.
Challenges in managing growth from "rage giving"
Converted one-time "rage givers" — donors who contributed during political surges — into long-term supporters by implementing strategies to keep them engaged and involved in the ongoing mission.
Successfully managed to keep many of the "rage-giving" donors engaged over time, converting a temporary surge into a sustained donor base and stronger community support.
Underdeveloped fundraising program
Created a clear case for support and an improved board engagement strategy. WC also helped the organization develop a more structured fundraising approach with better communication and clear donation asks.
The organization now has a more robust fundraising program, with better alignment between the board, staff, and donors, leading to increased resources and more consistent funding.
Marketing and development roles not clearly defined
Identified the need for a hybrid marketing and development role, creating a position designed to manage both areas initially, with plans for
it to eventually grow into
two separate roles as
resources increased.
This intervention led to improved communication efforts, with marketing and development becoming more organized. The organization saw continued success in attracting individual donors and securing grants.
Lack of major donors
Refined the strategy for engaging major donors, helping the organization identify and cultivate relationships with high-net-worth individuals, while also guiding their integration
into the broader
fundraising efforts.
While individual donor and grant success has grown, the organization is still in the process of strengthening its major donor program, with plans to build on the
current success.
